The mission of the Lake City Police Department is to provide a competent and courteous service to all citizens of the community in their homes and place of business while working toward establishing a community environment characterized by physical safety and personal freedom.

Chief Argatha Gilmore assumed command of the Lake City Police Department on September 28, 2009 following retirement from the Tallahassee Police Department as a captain following 25 years of service. Chief Gilmore is Lake City’s first woman and the first black police chief. She earned her bachelor's degree in criminology at Florida State University and received a Master’s in Public Administration from Florida A & M University. Chief Gilmore is a graduate from the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy (FBINA 214) and also a graduate of Harvard John F. Kennedy School of State and Local Government. Chief Gilmore is a member of the International Association Chief of Police (IACP) as well as an active member of the Florida Chief's Association. Chief Gilmore is currently serving as District Director 16 of the 3rd Circuit Florida Police Chief's Association. Her department has 45 sworn officers and an annual budget of over $3 million.
